The timeless battle…

by holotropik

Even though the DJ is now a culturally accepted icon of modern times behind the scenes lies an ugly battle that just won’t die down.

Most people don’t realise that this battle exists and have blindly accepted to a certain degree that DJ’s have replaced real musicians in most venues and moved to center stage to take the musicians place as the weekend idol. Behind the scenes the DJ and the musician are arch rivals and a hatred exists that runs very deep.

If you ask any person on the street will they know the difference between a DJ and a musician?

Some will know the difference and blindly accept it anyway, as the DJ is now the common mailboy for a good time in the local club on a Saturday night. Some will not know the difference between a DJ and a musician and actually think that the DJ is actually making the music with all these new fandangled instruments somehow. That misconception is essentially where this battle begins.

Both camps are in the right purely on the fact that they don’t care what the fuck the DJ is doing because they are just there to have a good time and wouldn’t know most of the tunes a DJ plays anyway…except for the requested pop track they just drunkenly asked him/her to play because it’s their birthday.

Yet this battle exists and if you dig around some music forums you may well come across the flame-wars that go on between musicians and DJ’s…it is very ugly!!

Yet for all the forum flame-wars, society has accepted the DJ, as evident by the existence of “Guitar Hero” and now “DJ Hero” as companions in societies expressive avenue of the ultimate hero worship rituals on a drunken Friday night. I’d be interested to know which game is more popular actually?

And yes I am a soldier in this war along with my comrades, fellow Electronic musicians who are implicated purely because they choose to make Electronic Dance Music using modern instruments and technology. Yes, for the last ten years I have never been referred to as a musician but rather insulted by the definition of being a DJ. I have even been featured on a nation wide radio station and referred to as a DJ rather than a musician. Damn straight that is a kick in the teeth!!

Imagine slogging it out for 7-odd years and finally getting noticed but only as a DJ rather than a creative musician!!

You can see that this battle rages on and may never end….

I think I see the point you are trying to make here (especially these days with software like Traktor), but I disagree with several key parts.

    1. Example; A friend of mine is a dj and only a dj. He uses two tech 1200’s and a 2 channel mixer. No software, no effects, no scratching, or things like that. Yet, he still buils hours of usually non planned sets, in which he uses ~30 second of a song at a time, And creates dope sets and bombs and whatnot. And not for a moment can you tell if there is 1 or 2 decks playing or if a song is being added or taken out. I think this requires far more musical talent than many producers have.

    2. People prefer dj’s. People would rather hear the best songs, and songs they know rather than someones attempt at dance music.

    3. Forum bitterness is not representative of basically anything.

    4. Any known dj is a producer as well.

Sorry to pirate this, but this seemed unjustly harsh to dj’s.

Exactly what theme are you running on this particular site ? I really want this. Would you post exactly where you got it from ?

It is custom from a design of unknown origin. It’s made from bits and pieces but the original template came from the Wordpress site.
